After five of six events, Ed Housel
had a nice
lead over the other men who have already scored in three races. Davin
Oskvig had moved himself into contention with a strong second place in the Can
Lake 50 Mile. A finish worth 80 points or more
by Daven Oskvig at Mendon would move him ahead of Housel's total.
Oskvig led from the gun, got his second consecutive Mendon win and brought
his 2011 best 3 races point total over 300 and 20 points clear of Housel.
Elizabeth Brundige had the smallest of leads over Heather Danielson after
five events. Brundige just has
to beat her 90.83 total from the GLER 100k to extend her lead but she beat
that soundly by taking the win at Mendon, moving 9 points clear of Danielson
and also getting over 300 points.
Final Series Standings by Category
Notes: All men are scored
based on the performance of the overall male winner; all women are
scored based on the performance of the overall female winner. The male and
female winners will be awarded the maximum score of 100 points, 104 points
for the 50 Mile races and 106 points for the GLER 100K. Other
finishers in each category are awarded points proportional their
performance. There is no duplication of awards, i.e., the runner
with the next most points to the Series Champion will be awarded First Place
in the age group category.

 | BPAC 6 Hour Distance
Classic - John Ehntholt (44.49 miles) / Jennifer Roxburgh (32.50 miles)
Shelley Viggiano (tied for 3rd woman with 32.50
miles) reported, "It was a wonderful, blustery day with painful sideways
hail at times. ... I can't begin to explain how strong that wind was -
stop you dead in your tracks, blow a smaller person off course kind of
wind." Running through an epic day of hail, snow, rain and winds up
to 40mph, John Ehntholt (Glens Falls) was the only runner to go out
for a 14th lap. Bruce Riexinger (Lancaster) finished 13 laps
for 42.25 miles with less than five minutes left. Ed Housel
(Rochester) finished 13 laps after the 6 hour mark for a pro-rated total
of 41.20 miles and first veteran. Jennifer Roxburgh
(Pickering, Ontario) finished ten laps with less than nine minutes left on
the clock for the women's win. Christine Stevens (Newark)
finished her tenth lap after 6 hours for a pro-rated 31.63 miles.
Natalie Werner (Portageville) and Shelley Viggiano (Rochester)
both stopped at nine laps for 29.25 miles.
Despite the difficult conditions, 40 runners finished 8 laps (26.00 miles)
or more. Click

 | Highland Forest 1,
2, 3 (30 Miles) - Cory West 5:10:33 / Liz Brundige 5:23:23
Heavy overnight rains made for a slow trail with mud even
in places that usually have firm footing. While it wasn't a day
for records, the conditions did suit those who relish a good romp through
the mud. Cory West (Horseheads) took the men's overall title ahead
of Joel Cisne. Indicative of the slippery conditions, his 5:17:30
finish was over 27 minutes slower than his second place time in 2010.
Liz Brundige (Ithaca) was the third finisher overall and first woman.
Last year's winner, Ed Housel (Rochester) finished fourth overall and
first in the Veteran Men category in 5:36:30. Tom Nesterick (Watertown) finished fifth overall and first in the Masters Men category
in 5:45:01. Heather Danielson (Rochester) was the second woman to
finish (5:45:48). Click

 | Finger Lakes Fifties (50k
and 50 mile): Record
fields in both races; several course records were set despite hot day.
50k - Paul Wallace (4:31:08!) / Sheryl Wheeler (5:36:43).
Paul Wallace (Denver, PA) ran conservatively on the first 25k lap and
finished with a slight negative split, overtaking Sean Andrish (age
41, Leesburg, VA) and Peter Lawry (Charleston, NH) on the second
lap for the win and new men's course record. Andrish finished second in 4:36:30 for a new
Masters Male course record. Lawry finished a close third overall and
second Open Male in 4:38:32. Sheryl Wheeler (age 48,
Rhinebeck) was the top woman overall. Hannah Haynes
(Fairborn, OH) and Leah Lawry (Charlestown, NH) finished tied for
second in 5:43:36 closely followed by Mariana Bartonicek (Syracuse)
in 5:44:10. Elizabeth Mainiero (age 50, Southbury, CT) was
the first Veteran finisher overall and first Masters Female in 5:56:54.
James Miner (age 62, Dryden) was the Veteran Male winner in
6:44:07. A total of 108 runners
finished the 50k.
50 mile - Jeff Powers (7:06:02) / Elena Makovskaya (9:11:46!).
Jeff Powers (Wilmington, DE) was the fastest on all three laps, gradually
pulling clear despite the well paced run of Chad Denning (New
London, NH) who placed second in 7:10:45. Christopher Bynum
(New York City) finished third in 7:52:30, finally pulling away from
John Ehntholt (age 44, Glens Fall) in the third lap. Ehntholt
was the first Masters Male finisher in 8:12:03. Elena Makovskaya
(Hackensack, NJ) took the lead from Elizabeth Brundrige (Ithaca)
after lap 1 and pulled away to set a new women's course record.
Brundrige finished second woman in 9:26:56. Heather Danielson
(Rochester) was third woman in 9:44:00. Liz Bondar (age 42,
Madison Heights, MI) was the first Masters Female finisher in 11:26:36,
closely followed by Susan Baehre (age 52, Triangle, VA), the first
Veteran Female in 11:37:41. A total of 46 finished the 50 mile.

 | Green Lakes Endurance Runs (50k and 100k): Tropical storm
Irene made for a wet course that got muddier as the day went on.
Despite the slippery course conditions, new overall course records were
set in the 100k by Jim Sweeney and Serena Wilcox. In the 50k, Mary
Dasilva also set the 50k age group record for women age 60+.
50k - Ted Nagowski (4:02:53) / Heather Danielson
(4:50:22). Remarkably for the conditions, Ted Nagowski (age 50,
Peterborough, ON) and Ed Housel (age 52, Rochester) both threatened
Housel's 50-59 age group record (4:00:43) set last year. Housel
finished second overall in 4:05:55. Joseph Lyman (Cortland)
finished third overall in 4:15:04 for first in the 18-39 Open Men's
division. Jason Griffith (Thousand Oaks, CA) was the first

and won the 40-49 age group just ahead of Kellie Smirnoff (Jacksonville,

Pesco Koplowitz (Plainville) won the 50+ age group in 6:38:42.

100k - Jim Sweeney (8:20:11!) / Serena Wilcox (9:52:01!). Jim
Sweeney (Albany) ran remarkably even spits to pass early leader Daven
Oskvig (Amherst) and beat by more than two minutes what many thought
was the unbreakable course record set by Brazilian Valmir Nunes in 2008.
Oskvig hung on to finish in 8:39:00, becoming only the third man to run
under 9 hours in the GLER 100k. Serena Wilcox (Cambridge, VT)
also took advantage of the cool if wet conditions and set a new women's
100k record for the 12.5k loop course. David Miller (Ashburn,
VA) finished fifth overall in 11:15:07 for the men 50+ age group.

Lake 50 Ultras (50k and 50 miles) - Unseasonably high temperatures, a
hot sun and no cloud cover made this a tougher race than usual. Leg

Despite the conditions, the male and female winners of the 50 mile ran the
3rd fastest times ever and a new 50-59 age group record was set.
Results are posted on the race website. Here are
links to those results:
50K Overall - Aidan Cooper (4:27:11) and Daniele Cherniak
(4:28:07); 31 finishers
50 Mile Overall - Tim Fisler (6:55:04) and Christine Torres
(7:40:23); 70 finishers |
